Hello from Sheffield!
In this edition I’m inviting you to take part in a short task. Write down three words that best describe how you feel about your work at the moment. Then tell me - how long have you been feeling like this?
Has it been days, months, or years? This information can be used as a guide for your next steps. If you send me your response in an email: sarah@sarahventurer then I’ll send you a follow-up question.
In this episode of About The Adventure podcast, Jen Scotney says that she is still finding her way since she stopped working as a human rights lawyer. Through her career change she's forging a new path that balances writing, creating her podcast, hosting yoga retreats, and coaching, and emphasises the importance of deep rest. Jen is less about job labels and more about moving towards what is calling her:
“I have this faith that if you go with what you enjoy, you can’t go wrong.”
I think that this episode about career change will resonate most with people who are:
suffering in the workplace, particuarly with losing health
thinking about forging a new path but reluctant to let go of the investment in education and years of work experience
worried about "going backwards" by changing direction
curious about how to get out of a situation that makes you feel trapped

“Now I was giving myself permission to walk and immerse myself in the landscape I’ve longed for since childhood. What surprised me was that I didn’t feel alone at all.”
In August I walked The Herriot Way, a 52-mile (84km) circular route in the Yorkshire Dales. I wrote in my journal along the way and I’ve typed it up as five blog posts, sharing my reflections and encounters along the way. Click the button below to read the first blog post and then follow the trails to the following four posts.
Featured coaching session
Let’s sit together with a flask of tea among the hawthorn and silver birch trees, soaking up the warmth of the sun and looking out to Kinder Scout. “What do you notice?” I would ask you. Perhaps at first you would describe the landscape, nature and the elements. Then I would encourage you to take inspiration from that to describe what you notice about yourself and how you feel.
Walking is an important part of the coaching experience with me, but there are other important aspects that are integral. Space and stillness, play and rest. Everything is interwoven and guided by me with care and tenderness.

Coming up…
The next episode of About The Adventure podcast will be a career change interview with Wildlife Illustrator, Photographer and Mountain Leader - Louise Earnshaw who left her job as an Art and Photography teacher in April 2023.
I’m going to a yoga and walking day retreat by Jen Scotney in October. I’m really looking forward to the slow yin yoga and nidra, with a sound bath of crystal singing bowls. There are still a few tickets left here.
Here is a written version of my talk at Sisterhood Social in July 2023: “I believe in…Speaking Up.” Rather than overcoming a fear of public speaking, I saw the opportunity as a curious opening into the unknown. Like stepping into cold wild water, I trusted that I would find my way by connecting with my breath and my body. Read it now.
